Roland Hard Disk 'VS' Workstations

Roland VS-890

Now no longer in production, the 'VS' workstations from Roland were a breakthrough product in terms of price, features, portability and stability.

Not the easiest of systems to learn, but a very stable platform and great sound quality combined to make these units very popular.  The place to go to for information and support is www.vsplanet.com where you can find forums for specific ranges of VS workstations as well as a host of other stuff, including VS Planet Radio!

Some of these workstations did have some small quirks, such as the dreaded jogwheel problem, but generally fixes or workarounds have been found for these.

In my opinion though, a real enabling piece of software is VS Pro.  This allows full screen editing of the audio on the VS, using your computer screen.  And with a typical 19" flatscreen running at resolutions of around 1,900 x 1,440 that's a lot of information on screen!  The place to go for information is the VS Pro User Forum, which you can find here: http://vspro.conforums.com/index.cgi - you'll have to register to access these forums, but this is quick and painless...

I use my trusty old VS-1680 with VS Pro, and have a second VS, a VS-890, which I can link to the system as and when required, for an additional 8 tracks of audio.  So that's 24 track audio, with additional MIDI generated sequencer tracks (also running on VS Pro).

VS Pro is a Datasonics product: http://www.datasonics.com.au/ (scroll to end of home page)
